AOL has fired 40 employees in charge of AOL Instant Messenger’s development. Only basic maintenance and customer service staff will remain. AOL reassures that they “are not killing instant messenger.”But skeptics say the layoffs are the beginning of the end for AIM. If the service that gave life to LOL and BRB fades away, will anybody miss it?
Ironically, the team behind the most recent iteration of AIM was about to shut down its prior app, Brizzly.
This certainly has an air of finality about it. End of an era.

The app simply links up your Twitter and PayPal accounts to a little service called Chirpify, allowing you to send a cool $5 to anyone on Twitter, based on their @ handle. It’s nerdy. It’s beery. TNW loves it.

RIP Etta James: The legendary singer’s death was just announced — she died of complications from leukemia, and also suffered from dementia and hepatitis C. “Etta James is unmanageable,” claimed manager Lupe DeLeon (a big fan), “and I’m the closest thing she’s ever had to a manager.” Here’s her best-known song, “At Last.” She was 73.
